This last Tuesday, the students of Cutcomb rural school took a field trip to the McMurtry Ranch owned by Ted Turner where they run over 2,000 buffalo. Students Nevaeh Hotz, Ainsley Adamson, Taycee Adamson and teacher Stacey Adamson got to watch as the ranch hands were taking the buffalo down the chute, preg checking, vaccinating, and sorting. They use a great deal of technology, like a chip in the ear tag that they scan to track each individual buffalo. The buffalo make a unique grunting sound and some of the bulls weigh 1,500 pounds. The students got to pet the buffalo and also bring home a buffalo horn. "It is much heavier than we were expecting. We loved our field trip!"

As an ongoing project, in collaboration with the Niobrara National Scenic River, the 7th graders at VMS do monthly water quality testing. During the winter months, Mrs. Perrett collects water from the Niobrara River and the students do the testing in the classroom. The students enjoy this break from regular classroom activities.
