REMINDER: VES Picture Day is Tuesday, September 10. Picture packets can be turned in to the office or to your student's classroom teacher. Our annual Student Health Checks will be completed on Sep. 10 as well, with a follow up day on Sep. 13.
VES Students participated in the Miles of Smiles Day this week. We had over 90 students receive a dental screening and fluoride application. Students learn about the importance of brushing their teeth and earned a free toothbrush of their choice along with free toothpaste!

Ft. Niobrara Wildlife Refuge was VMS fifth graders’ destination today to learn about all things bison. Knowledge gleaned included information on the Ogallala Aquifer, differentiation of antlers, horns, and pronghorns, grazing control, use of the refuge for bison management, Native American bison artifacts, as well as meteorological reasons for migration.

VMS 7th grade students in Mrs. Perrett's Science class had an optional at home activity:
Students mixed borax, hot water and food coloring, hung a chenille stem shape in the solution and cooled it. VIOLA! Crystals grew! The longer it takes to grow, the bigger the crystals
Some "out of the box" thinking students used other materials for their crystals to grow on (like a chicken feather).
After a 2 hour rain delay at the Ainsworth Invite on 8/29, the Valentine Girls Golf team placed 2nd with a 217 after 9 holes.

Tree Phenology - ask VMS 7th graders about it! Phenology is the study of the timing of recurring biological events in trees, such as flowering, budburst, leaf fall and unfolding. Mrs. Perrett's 7th grade Science classes will be keeping records of the trees on VMS grounds throughout the school year, tracking and studying the changes each season. Students also got to visit with a couple of guests on their tree hike!
