The Girl's wrestling meet in Battle Creek today is being postponed to a later date due to weather in their area.
The fifth-grade students have been learning about alchemy in Mrs. Krolikowski's science class. Mr. Sayer conducted a demonstration on changing a copper penny into silver and then into gold. Trickery or not? The copper penny was coated with zinc when liquid sodium hydroxide was heated with the zinc and penny. Then when the zinc-coated penny is heated in a flame it forms a common allow known as brass. Alchemy at its finest.

Check out this link with a video of Mrs. Keller's VMS fifth graders' first major social studies research project that required extensive investigation of North America's Native American tribes circa 16th and 17th centuries. The students' diligence resulted in quality research reports and creative dioramas that authentically depicted the tribes' lives. Great work, fifth graders! https://youtu.be/VO50tsdO0jc

MECA and the NSAA continue to collaborate on and determine needed modifications in order to receive necessary approval from local health officials for the 2021 tournament. The event plan will be submitted to the Douglas County Health Department the first week in January and the plan is for tickets to go on sale at 10 AM on January 19th. More information will become available in the new year; until then, CHI Health Center Omaha is thankful for the community’s patience and understanding while we all navigate the uncertainties of this pandemic. We jointly remain committed to taking the appropriate steps in order to ensure a safe and successful event.
Updated guidelines for attending events this week. Thursday - Gothenburg has increased the number to 4 fans per wrestler. Please make sure your athlete gets the names to Mr. Allison by today as the deadline is 10 am tomorrow morning for this event. Friday - Girls Basketball @ Gordon Rushville - JV starts at 6:30 Central Time. 5 fans per athlete and they are going to do this on the honor system. Saturday- Wrestling at Kearney Catholic. At this time they are not going to have any restrictions as it will be a small enough event they can let everyone in. JV/V Basketball vs Minden. We are not going to have any attendance restrictions for this event as they are traveling a long distance and with the format we are splitting the boys and girls up. Here are the times and location for these games: 1:00 Girls Varsity @ HS 1:00 Boys JV @ MS 2:30 Boys Varsity @ HS 2:30 Girls JV @ MS - 2 quarters Remember that mask are required at all indoor events. If you see someone not wearing one please remind them that we get to have these events because we are wearing them. Patrol your group! Also please social distance at these events the best you can.
The NSAA has come out with new attendance guidelines. We like most schools are currently working on a plan to figure out the best way to handle the increased capacity. We have been in contact with all the schools that we compete against this week and will pass on information as we receive it. As of now this is what we have: 2/7 - JV Wrestling @ Gothenburg 4:30. 2 Fans per wrestler and you must be on the list that the coaches will submit. The event will be live-streamed @ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpSg9QMoJtUkc-az4UkPcFA/featured
The girl's wrestling invite in Winnebago has been postponed until Wednesday due to a possible storm moving into that area. Wrestling will start at 10 am and the live stream link is: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYgmUrLvsNn5RsCRkjnWFDQ
What an act of kindness the employees of VCS were shown recently by generous people of this wonderful community. A mug filled with goodies was presented to all employees. Jan Smith, Tammy Lutter, and Scott McClellen visited all buildings to thank us for what we’ve done during this pandemic. Thank you to the community of Valentine for your support!
It was brought to our attention this morning that the tickets for the West Holt game have the wrong date and time printed on them. JV games start at 3:30 today. We apologize for not catching this.
A couple changes. Chadron Holiday Tournament just changed fan numbers from4 to 6. If you want to add to your list please have your athlete contact their coach. We are sending the list first thing tomorrow morning. Gothenburg JV Wrestling Tournament on Jan 7th has a time change from 3:00 to 4:30 pm.

Wrestling - We were unable to fill the 8th spot on Saturday for our Invite so with that we can now operate out of the High School gym only since we are under 8 teams and the 112 participant guideline. There will be no wrestling at the Middle School on Saturday.
Wrestling parents and fans: We still need a few table workers for Friday and Saturday. It's your only chance to watch wrestling live. Your name has to be on the worker pass list to get into the gym either day. We will not be adding anyone to the list tomorrow after 11:00 a.m. If you would like to sign up to help please email Mr. Brown at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the school. Go Badgers!!!!
JV Boys basketball will only be 3 quarters on Monday at West Holt due to low numbers.
Reminder to Basketball Parents- Your athlete needs to let their coaches know tomorrow how many tickets you are requesting for the games in Atkinson on Tuesday. We were given 150 tickets total and will distribute them as equally as we can to household members and grandparents that want to attend. These will be distributed on Thursday at practice.
Attendance for Ainsworth Basketball tomorrow. We are unable to open it up to the public due to NSAA's protocol. We are going to increase it out to 6 household members including grandparents. People on the list can stay for both the girls and boys games. Parents please check with your athlete and see who they put on the list. If you need to add please call the school and have your people added. Wrestling Invite - We are not allowing fans due to NSAA protocol. We had 14 parents sign up tonight to help and we need more help. If you would like to help at the Invite please email Mr. Brown at email@example.com or call the school. We will have an attendance list compiled by Thursday evening. Please understand that we have to operate 2 gyms so there is a chance you might not get to watch Valentine.
We will be staying in the "orange" phase for activities through the Holiday Break. The NSAA released the following statement: To continue to support our NSAA member schools and their efforts to keep kids in school and participating in NSAA activities, the NSAA has decided to stay with the Governor’s “Orange Phase” of the Directed Health Measure regarding fan attendance and 6-foot separation between households. Additionally, schools may allow grandparents to attend contests. Spectators, coaches, and non-active participants are required to wear face coverings at all times while attending these events. Non-compliance with the above may include but not be limited to reprimands, fines or exclusion from the post season. This decision is based on an abundance of caution as we move through the holiday season. By doing these things now, we are hopeful we can host NSAA winter championships in February and March. This is in effect until January 4, 2021.
We have had a few inquiries about fans attending the JV Wrestling tonight in O'Neill. The event is being held in their practice room and has very limited seating therefore O'Neill has decided they are still not going to allow fans. We are waiting on word from the NSAA on guidelines for increasing capacity to events. Once we receive the guidelines we will go through them and put a plan in place for increasing attendance at home events. We are still having the parent meeting tonight for wrestling at 6:00 pm in the commons area.
Scheduling Updates - Due to low participation numbers we have canceled all Reserve Basketball games. 12/29 - Girls Wrestling @ Winnebago 9:00 am 1/8 - JV/V Girls Basketball at Gordon moved back to 6:30 central time and the girls JV game will only be 2 quarters. 1/9 - Wrestling at Kearney Catholic 1/15 - Girls Wrestling at Battle Creek 4:30 2/11- JV/V Basketball vs North Central. All games will be played at the HS due to both games only being 2 quarters. Order of games will be Girls JV, Boys JV, Girls V, Boys V. 2/19 - JV/V Boys Basketball @ Gordon moved back to 6:30 central time and the boys JV game will only be 2 quarters.
Wrestling Fans: We have the Valentine Dual Invite coming up next weekend, 12 pm start. We are not going to allow fans due to the size of the event (20 teams) and the 25% attendance restriction policy for our gyms (250 HS, 150 MS). By the time we have all of the kids, helpers, managers and coaches we are going to be at the limits. However, we do need lots of help and that can be your ticket in to watch. We will be operating out of both the MS an HS gym so we will need to have help to staff both gyms. We understand that everyone will want to watch Valentine but unfortunately that isn’t possible. We traditionally run one of the best tournaments in the state because of our volunteers. In a year where tournaments are being forced to shrink because of the restrictions we actually grew because of the format we have come up with and our hope is to keep these teams coming in future years as it is great for our community. We will give parents top priority for helping. If you would like to help please attend an informational meeting on Monday December 15th at 6 pm in the HS commons. Mask will be required to attend this meeting and also to be worn while you help at the invite. If you can’t attend and want to help please email Mr. Brown at firstname.lastname@example.org before the 15th. Go Badgers!!!
As we mentioned before attendance at basketball games is an ever-changing format. After 2 home games we looked at the number of fans in attendance and the number of the 6 people for each athlete that are actually showing up. At this time, we are going to lower the number to 4 household members from 6 but we are going to allow all fans to attend all games to hopefully get a better crowd for both the boys and girls. The maximum we can have at this time is 250 and that counts the athletes participating. We understand that some of you will use up to six and if that is the case please email Mr. Brown at email@example.com and we will look at the numbers that the opposing school will be bringing and how many are on our list and we will accommodate on a case-by-case basis by who put in for extra people first. We ask that you do this the day prior so we have time to get an actual head count of what we are expecting. Also remember that wearing a mask correctly is not an option as it is mandated from the Governor’s Office for us to have these events for our kids. We have a few in our stands that are not abiding by this mandate. We have to remember that we are here for our kids and we get to continue to do this because of this mandate. Schools are actually stopping games and removing people that are not abiding by the mandate. We are Badgers and we are better than that. You are also required to social distance 6 feet from other households. Social distancing does not exclude you from wearing a mask. Please do your part and keep your mask on correctly and remind those around you and emphasize why we are getting to have these events for our athletes. We really don’t want to have to stop games and remove fans. Please help us out!! Our next home game is against Ainsworth so please get your list updated with your athlete and give the names to the coaches.
Time Change for Tuesday basketball vs Ainsworth. Due to both JV games only being 2 quarters we are going to move the start times of the JV games to 5 pm. JV Boys will play at the MS and JV Girls will play at the HS followed by Varsity Girls and then Varsity Boys.
Time Changes for Jan 21st. Both schools are lacking numbers to play full games at the JV level so we have adjusted the schedule to the following: 4:15 - JV Girls two 8 minute quarters 5:00 - JV Boys two 8 minute quarters 6:00 - Varsity Girls Varsity Boys to follow
Upcoming events through Christmas and requirements: All events require mask to be worn by fans in attendance. We ask that you keep them over your mouth and nose. We are doing our best to keep activities going and you can do your part by abiding by the rules that we have to follow from the Health Department. Attending Valentine Home Basketball Games: Currently we are only allowed to allow household family members into games and we have a 25% capacity restriction which means that we are allowed to have 250 people in attendance. Each player will be given a list today of who is on their current list of attendees. We are allowing 6 people for each player. They are being asked to give to their parent/guardian so they know who is on the list. If you need to make changes to the list please email Mr. Brown at email@example.com 24 hours prior to the event. It was decided at the parent's meeting last night that we are only going to allow girl's parents at the girl's games and boy's parents at the boy's games in Valentine. The way this will work is that we will open the doors 30 minutes prior to game time of the girl's game. Only girls fans on the list will be allowed in to watch the girl's games. As boy's fans arrive they will be asked to gather in the commons or auditorium whichever is available on that particular night. Once the girl's game is over girl's fans are required to leave through the gym doors on the southwest corner of the gym, please do not walk across the gym floor at this time. We will sanitize the bleachers quick and then allow the boy's fans to enter the gym for the boy's games. Valentine fans will sit on the east side of the gym and are required to wear mask over mouth and nose and social distance themselves from other households. Away game guidelines will be published as we receive them. We are going to try to update every Friday on social media for the following weeks games. Things are ever-changing so please stay tuned! We will update as quickly as we can when things change. GO BADGERS!!

Please also understand that attendance rules can change at anytime to coincide with the Governor's restrictions.

Reminder...VCS will dismiss at 2pm today, November 16th due to District In-service.
The one-act team plans to compete at the Gothenburg Invite on Tuesday, November 17. However, Gothenburg's Covid protocol will not allow for additional audience members to attend. Our cast/crew list (along with directors) are the only permissible attendees. Thank you for your understanding, and we will update you with any further updates.
Tonight at Midnight the Governor's new health directives will go into effect until November 30th. Some of these will have an impact on how we conduct our home events. We currently are allowed to have 50% capacity but with the new restrictions we have to move that to 25% capacity. So what that means that for MS games we are going to allow each player 2 tickets. The tickets can only used by people that live in the same household of the athlete - they can't be shared with anyone else per Governor's directive. Those in attendance must sit with their family members and social distance from other families (6 ft). We are also working on ways with other upcoming events to try to conduct them the best way possible Mask are required for all of these events. We ask that you do your best to follow the directives as it is helping keep our students in school and activities. We will continue to adjust as new measures come out. Thanks for your cooperation. GO BADGERS!!

"Valentine High School has a deep appreciation for Mr. Cochran" Valentine High School wants to show our appreciation for Mr. Bryson Cochran. Mr. Cochran started off at Valentine Community Schools as a paraprofessional at the elementary school and then came over to the high school and worked with several kids helping in them both in and out of the classroom. This summer Mr. Cochran's work ethic and effort that he poured into his responsibilities didn't go unnoticed by other staff members, teachers and administration. Valentine High School is currently without two custodians and Mr. Cochran has taken the bull by the horns and continues to work and get all the things done that need to be done which also still includes one period a day being a paraprofessional. Perhaps the quality that stands out most is that he not only takes on more responsibility with broader shoulders, but does it with an infectious positive attitude and a smile on his face. We encourage everybody that the next time you see this man to thank him for all the hard work and dedication to the students of Valentine High School!

Please read the following guidelines set forth by the North Central Health Department. If you are showing any of the symptoms on this chart please go visit your health care provider. If they test you for COVID-19, you and every person in the household are required to quarantine. There are 4 points listed that explain when a child can return to school. If your child meets any one of these criteria they may return to school. Valentine Community Schools is committed to keeping our doors open and teaching students face to face. Please be honest with your symptoms and the health care provider's directions so we can do what's best for our students and community.
Ainsworth Community Schools COVID Guidelines- Cross Country Teams: Visiting teams will be responsible for monitoring and documenting temps before leaving home. If this does not occur we ask that you let us know and we will have a person available to do so when arriving at our facilities. Coaches will sign-off that they have verified temperatures of the entire travelling party when they arrive. Masks are highly encouraged by team members, coaching staff, etc. Do know that based on recommendations by the NSAA and the health departments this could change in a moment's notice. (Please have masks available if we were to change to mandatory masks for common areas such as clubhouses, restrooms, etc.) Team camps are to be set-up in a way that keeps teams separate. Please encourage your athletes to socially distance themselves from members of other teams. Conversations are okay but should happen only at extended distances (at least 6 feet away). Teams will be called near the starting line in the minutes before the start of the race. All even numbered starting boxes will have a second box, off the starting line, in which runners are to be housed and checked for proper attire. Just before the start of the race the even number teams will be called to the starting line. We have visited with the NSAA and have discussed a plan so that we can safely provide an awards ceremony. As a result there will be some modifications to the area in which they will be held. Students may come and receive his/her medal that will be stationed at socially distanced intervals. We will provide more information on this the day of the meet. Make athletes and your entire team aware that they can opt out of the awards ceremony if they would like. Fans: Fans entering the course are highly encouraged to wear a mask and to practice social distancing. This is especially important in the clubhouse area. Cones and a second painted boundary line will be used to create a further than usual barrier from the runners. This effort is being made to create an extended safety zone. Concessions will be available inside the clubhouse. Anyone purchasing something from the concession stand is asked to wear a mask. Please limit total time in the clubhouse and when possible please consume food and drink outside. Hand sanitizer will be located in the clubhouse.

Valentine High School graduated class of 2020 will be having a ceremony on Friday, July 31 at 4:00 PM tentatively at the high school gym. Due to the North Central Health District Directive Health Measures, Valentine High School has to work under the following guidelines for their “mock” graduation for the class of 2020. *50% of maximum capacity *Parties, aka ticketed groups, at a gathering cannot exceed 8 individuals *Maintain at least 6ft of separation between ticketed groups These measures are effective through 11:59 PM, July 31, 2020; unless renewed, extended, or terminated by subsequent order, all persons in Cherry, Keya Paha, Brown, Rock, Boyd, Holt, Knox, Antelope, and Pierce counties are ordered to comply. Valentine high school’s plan includes the following: -A Google form will be sent to the senior students and parents through our SMS system. RSVP’s will be required from the students of the class of 2020. These RSVP’s are due by Wednesday, July 15. Any RSVP’s returned post deadline will not be accepted as plans to move forward rely on the number of students attending the event. -Those who RSVP will be provided with 8 tickets in the form of waivers. 7 of those tickets can be given to people the graduate would like to attend the ceremony. The 8th ticket will be filled out by the student and will be the 8th member of the party during the entire event. Once these tickets are handed out their list cannot change. For instance, an individual becomes ill and cannot attend, their ticket is not transferable. -The days leading up to the event the individuals of tickets groups are asked to stay home if they have been ill or have symptoms (including: fever, sore throat, dry persistent cough, shortness of breath, new loss of taste or smell, etc.). -Only those with signed waivers (tickets) will be allowed to attend the ceremony. Those tickets will be collected at the door and those parties will be expected to maintain a 6ft distance from other parties inside and outside the facilities. -All members of a party are asked to arrive at the same time to be able to enter the building and minimize possible exposure. -The parties will have groups of chairs 6ft apart from other parties on the auditorium floor. Parties will be required to sit in their group from beginning to end. -Seniors will sit with their families during the ceremony as a part of their party. -During the ceremony the graduated students will walk across the stage and move their tassel and return to their seat. Nothing will be exchanged with the student. -Speeches will be performed by the selected individuals if they plan on attending. -Due to the restrictions there will be no band or choir during the ceremony. -Each individual party will be dismissed starting with the party closest to the exit. Again, this is to insure that the parties maintain correct social distancing. -There cannot be any group pictures taken due to the 6ft social distancing restriction. -Each party will be allowed 1 (one) member to be able to take pictures when their student is on the stage during the moving of the tassel. -All seniors who RSVP will be required to participate in the ceremony practice that will be held on July 30 at 4:00 PM at the high school gym. -Seniors will be expected to be dressed in appropriate attire and wear their cap and gown with tassel.

Great day in Art 1. A student graciously volunteered to bring horses for the class to draw and observe. VES Badgers are hard at work again this year in meeting our three school-wide expectations, be safe, be responsible, and be respectful. We will be holding a monthly assembly honoring those who have earned a badger paw or positive office referral and also to introduce the next month's focus. One name will be drawn for a special surprise. We held September's assembly on September 3rd, and pictured are all of our students who had earned a badger paw prior to that day. The name drawn was 3rd grader Alex Monroe, and on September 6, she got to have a special lunch with some of the NRSA rodeo queens who were in town. Students will also sign their name to our autograph wall in the front lobby (pictured is Javarius Reed, 5th grader, who earned two badger paws in one day). If you see a badger paw or positive office referral come home, celebrate! Good work, Badgers!
