Fifth grade students have been studying basic chemistry concepts. They have been practicing using the Periodic Table to identifying the atomic number, atomic mass, element symbol, number of protons, electrons and neutrons. They also have been studying the structure of the atom by using several atom models including Bohr's model and the electron cloud/ modern model. In order for students to continue studying chemistry they may use the web sites listed at the end of this article.

Science Units of Study for VES 5th Graders
Learning Goals Match

Nebraska State Science Standards (NESA) Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
21st Century Compentencies, and Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM)

Inquiry and measurement skills are practiced and demonstrated throughout the year in all units of study.

Inquiry~Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate: http://enhancinged.wgbh.org/research/eeeee.html

Measurement~ Fifth grade students will practice and improve their ability to use the metric system when measuring length, distance, mass, weight, volume, and density. They will use multiple strategies to convert metric units: Kilo, Hecto, Deka, Meter{Base}, Deci, Centi and Milli (King Henry Doesn’t Mind Drinking Chocolate Milk).

Geology~Fifth grade students will study how the movement of tectonic plates and the forces of the agents of erosion change the Earth. They will practice using the evidence left in the layers of the earth (paleontology, archeology, geology, mineralogy).

Biology/Ecology~ Fifth grade students will study the how the populations of living organisms change over time, reproduce, react to environmental changes, and share in the success of all living organisms on Earth.
