BADGER OF THE WEEK - Oct 30th, 2017

 

Wyatt Hitchcock, Senior, Football

 

Wyatt had 25 rushes for 114 yards in the Badgers first round playoff victory vs. Sutton.  Wyatt also leads the team in rushing with 744 yards going into the second round of playoffs this Friday at Yutan.

Calvin Stoeger, Freshman

 

Calvin is one of the most respectful, caring, attentive individuals I have in class.  Calvin is an outstanding student in Spanish.  He is a  conscientious, hard working student who excels in Spanish.  He is always willing to help his classmates and includes everyone in group work.

Skyler Reagle a great leader on the court and in the hallway. She has a positive attitude, and works hard every day. She's eager to learn and keep improving on her volleyball skills.

SCHOLAR OF THE WEEK - Oct 22nd, 2017

 

Sadie Cadwallader, Freshman

 

Sadie has been very involved in the Valentine Chapter this year!  We would especially like to acknowledge her for her willingness to volunteer and serve the community of Valentine.  Sadie has went out of her way to volunteer and has been involved in every community service opportunity the Valentine FFA has offered through the first two months of the school year.  This has equated to over thirteen volunteer hours.  Thank you Sadie!

BADGER OF THE WEEK - October 16th 2017

 

Jordan Kelber, Senior, Football

 

Jordan Kelber broke the school record for career passing yards last week vs. Bridgeport.  The last 2 games he has thrown 8 touchdowns and 0 interceptions.  Against Bridgeport, all but one of his completions were for touchdowns. Also, he currently has thrown for 3266 yards in his career.

Mercy Maunu, Junior

 

Mercy is very diligent in her studies and she is a great example of a responsible and grateful scholar. She always thanks me after she has asked for assistance and is sincere in her thanks.  She is also very polite and genuinely cares for all those she comes in contact with! I consider it a privilege to have her as a student!

BADGER OF THE WEEK - October 9 2017

 

Dylan Witt, Junior, Cross-Country

 

At the Gordon XC meet, Dillon Witt displayed exceptional sportsmanship in returning to the course after he had finished his own race to accompany another runner to the finish. This runner trailed the field by at least 1500 m. Dillon and a handful of other runners ran with him the last 1000-1500 m so he wouldn't have to finish the race alone. A model all athletes should emulate. Proud to be a Badger.

Rhea is respectful, caring, helpful, and responsible! She works hard every day in choir and has a super attitude!!  She gets along well with her peers and strives to be her best every day!!  I am proud to have her in my class!!

Dylan Lurz, Senior, Football

 

Dylan has had a great year so far for the Badgers, leading the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and second on the team in total receptions. Dylan's interception vs. St. Paul sealed the win for the Badgers.

Bradi Larabee, Junior

 

Bradi is a active contributor and a hard worker in my class. If there's ever a need for a volunteer or if she can help another student in any way she is always willing to. She always has a positive attitude, which reflects in her motivated work ethic. She also volunteers as a football student manager.

Lauren had a great couple of performances this past week. She posted a career low score of 96 at Gothenburg and then bettered it  at the Valentine invite with a 93 that earned her 5th place.

Faith Cox, Sophomore

 

Faith puts forth great effort in everything she does and she does it with a positive attitude.  Her hard work, determination, and great leadership earned her first place at districts this week in the Jr Division Range Judging! Best of Luck at State next week  Faith!!

Grace Woodraska, Sophomore

Grace Woodraska truly deserves to be our Scholar of the Week.  Not only is she a hardworking and fantastic student, she is an important part of our music program and the one-act and speech teams. Grace was also selected to play trumpet with the UNL marching band at this week's game against the Northern Illinois Huskies.  This is truly an honor to be chosen and speaks immensely of her great talent.

Sherridan Bancroft, Senior, Golf

Sherridan has bee leading the lady Badgers girls golf team all year. At Gothenburg last week she shot and 80, which puts her 2nd in VHS record books. Sherridan also scored a hole-in-one that same round.

Lacey Kennison, Junior
It has been such a pleasure getting to know Lacey this year in my class. No matter what the agenda for the day is the assignment, Lacey always comes to class with a positive attitude and brightens the classroom for her fellow classmates. Lacey has a fantastic personality and is always so willing to help anyone out that needs it. Lacey takes great pride in her work and even goes to the limit of telling me she sometimes enjoys my homework!! Lacey is a fantastic role model for the students of VHS.

James Battershaw, Senior, Track and Field
James had a great race in the 1600m run last week at West Holt. He managed to set a new personal record by 15 seconds! His time of 5:11 was good enough for 4th place.

Faith has maintained a 100% in Info Tech this entire semester. She always takes the time to fix assignments to get points back and also is always well prepared for tests and quizzes.

Eric demonstrates and sets an example of a competitor on the track this year. Eric placed 2nd in the 800 in the Winner Invite and anchored the 4x400 relay to 2nd place.

KayLynn Miller, Freshman
KayLynn Miller has been an exceptional student this year. She has always gone above and beyond in her Physical Science class. She is involved in FFA and knew in advance that she was going to be gone and wanted to get her assignments done so that she wouldn't be behind. After giving her her science assignment she had all of her Solar System and Universe layer work completed within 24 hours. Not just completed, but done with quality work. That is what I appreciate most about KayLynn is that her work isn't just completed, but it is always completed with quality.

Dylan Lurz, Senior, Track and Field
Dylan Lurz has done great things so far in his track season and it's just getting started. He was one of Valentine's two champions at the Bill Pistulka Winner Invitational. He has set a goal for his high jump and on Saturday the weather was perfect he showed his determination and cleared his new PR at 6'2" . As his high jump coach I see great things happening this year. He is also doing a great job of motivating his teammates and always raising the bar.

Kyle Critchfield, Senior
I would like to nominate Kyle Critchfield for the Scholar of the week. Kyle is always on task when he is working in the shop. He goes the extra mile to research problems or ways to accomplish tasks while in the shop. He has helped classmates when we are working on small engines and is always willing to take on a new project I have for him.

Will Major, Senior, Speech
All speech season, Will has consistently medalled at every meet, sometimes winning 3 or 4 medals. This is due to the hard work he's put in this year. In addition, he's volunteered much of his time to working with novices on the team and encouraging them to work harder. His highlights this season is winning persuasive speaking at the Southwest Conference meet and earning the 6th place medal at the State Speech Meet.

Kennedie is a fantastic student. Along with carrying straight A's she contributes to VHS in many other ways. As an office aide she is responsible and carries out instructions. She leads mat maids as a wrestling manager and helped coordinate the blood drive as a member of interact.

Jarrett Battershaw, Sophomore, Wrestling
Jarrett was a true teammate this year during the wrestling season. Jarrett filled in for an injured teammate for most of the year and even climbed into the State Rankings. When his teammate came back and Jarrett didn’t win the wrestle off he continued to work hard and push the varsity athlete to get better. Many students in this situation give up but that isn’t in Jarrett’s vocabulary - a true team before self teammate!!! Thank you Jarrett for the dedication to your team!!!!

Caleb Long - Sophomore, Wrestling
Caleb was crowned the 152 lb Class C State Champion in Wrestling this year. Caleb is an excellent role model for our kids and always conducts himself in the highest manner. Caleb is also involved in Cross Country and Track. Even though wrestling season is over Caleb is still working to get better and is also volunteering his time to youth wrestling as a coach.

As the President of the Valentine FFA chapter, Cade has been a leader all year. He has consistently been one of the members that is ready to help set up for an event and is always one of the last ones to leave. Cade has done an excellent job setting an example for our younger members this year.

D.J. Stephen, Senior, Wrestling
DJ was recently crowned the 170 lb State Champion for Class C at the State Wrestling Meet. DJ finished his season with a 41-3 record and earned his second medal at the state tournament. DJ also excels in the classroom where he carries a 3.9 GPA.

Chloe is who makes live streaming of school activities possible. She is responsible for setting up the equipment, making sure the live stream is streaming correctly, and coordinates other students who help. She has taken on this responsibility and has done a fantastic job all while carrying a 3.4 GPA.

Jared Fulton, Senior, Wrestling
Jared recently won the 5th place medal at the State Wrestling Tournament and went 3-0 at the state duals and by winning his last match clinched the State Dual Championships for the Badgers. Jared also recently was selected to play in the Western Nebraska All-Star Football Game.

I really enjoy having Clay in class! He works hard and always wants to do his best. He also has a kind heart and fun personality. He has been such a great reader this year as well. Just this semester, he has finished two books and is almost done with a third. I really appreciate that he is sharing those titles with his classmates as well. Several other boys have now read books based on his recommendations.

Jordan Kelber, Junior, Wrestling
Jordan claimed his second individual State Title in Omaha this last weekend and helped the Badgers set the Class C team scoring record with 195 points, a record they said would never be broken in Class C. Jordan won the only battle of undefeated wresters in his finals match and has a 40-0 record going into State Duals. Jordan also is an excellent student and leads by example with his hard work and dedication!

Sarah has really played well the last few games. She has been averaging 15.3 points, 3 steals and 6 rebounds on average the last three games vs. North Central, Bennett County and Gothenburg. Sara leads the lady badgers in points, rebounds, second in steals and assists on the year.

I have Steven in my Careers class. Steven has been busy with wrestling this winter but is always sure to get his assignments turned in before he is absent. He has done a great job of keeping up with his studies and participating in activities!

Hudson Pearman, Senior, Wrestling
Hudson enters the Class C4 District with a record of 30-2. Hudson recently earned his 175th career win and was a 3 time Southwest Conference Champion. Hudson has won every tournament this year but 1 and in that tournament he lost in hard fought battle agains a Wyoming State Champion. Hudson heads into districts and state hoping to claim his third medal at the state tournament.

Will has been working so hard in both band and choir! He has been
selected for 2nd and 3rd chair in the honor bands he is performing in at UNK and CSC! He also made Concordia and Oregon Trails!

Newt has been playing his best basketball the past few games. His effort has shown up in all aspects of the game. He has boosted his scoring and rebounding and has been super active on defense being the "hustle guy" by getting deflections, steals, and even taking a charge. His play has definitely helped the team tremendously lately.

Mataya has been a team leader on the court all year. She hustles and plays hard the whole time. She leads the team in points, offensive rebounds, 2pt field goals made, 3pt field goals made and steals. She is second in assists and third in total rebounds. Mataya is fun to watch compete.

I will nominate Cody McBride for scholar of the week. Cody always comes to class with a positive attitude and does everything that is asked of him without a complaint. Along with having a sweet personality, he has amazing work ethic and takes great pride in all his assignments, I really enjoy having Cody in my Chemistry class!

Gage Krolikowski, Freshman, Wrestling
Gage is have a unbelievable freshman year. He is only one of two undefeated freshman in the state. At the broken bow/Gothenberg Triangular he beat two ranked opponents. At the High Plains Invitational in Columbus, he beat the Class C #2 and #3 ranked wrestlers each twice. He is currently ranked #1 in Class C at 113 lbs.

Lizzie Harvey should be the scholar of the week due to her level of academic achievement at Valentine High School. She consistently shows up to class on time with her work completed and has a positive attitude in my classroom. She is a great student, maintaining a 94% in all of her classes and is fun to teach!

Aluxyn had a great week of basketball. Aluxyn tallied 29 points in her two games this week vs. Todd County and Ainsworth JV's. She always works hard in practice and is a leader on and off the court.

Kieron Wenig, Senior
Kieron is not afraid to challenge himself. This semester he is taking advanced biology, calculus, physics, medical terminology and expository writing all while maintaining a 3.7 GPA. Kieron exceeded all his Nebraska State Assessments (NeSA) last spring as a junior. He pushes himself academically and has a great attitude while doing it.

Kierra Gracey, Junior, One-Acts
In one-acts, we say, "You perform the way you practice."  Kierra Gracey takes this phrase to heart and is a leader on our team because of it.  She comes to practice every day with a smile and a positive attitude.  She gives every practice her best, always wanting to improve her character.  
Her performance as Shirley this year in "No Show" was incredible, and it wasn't an easy role either.  She did it all: accepting a proposal, singing, crying, and sword fighting.  I can't wait to see what Kierra accomplishes next year because I know it will be fantastic!

Michael is a very polite and respectful young man. Along with doing a great job in all his classes and completing all his work on time, Michael has not missed a single day of school in his high school career. He has carried a perfect attendance since January 9, 2012 of his 7th grade year.

Katherine Peterson, Freshman, One-Act Crew


As the one-act director, I cannot say enough good things about Katherine Petersen. She is reliable, punctual, and kind. She also does a fantastic job as our Light Board Operator. It is not an easy job this year because of the complicated and numerous changes throughout the play. This job is made even more difficult because she faces a new light board each week when we travel to other schools. The light board for Southwest Conference looked like the dashboard for a space shuttle, but she handled it with ease.

In Physical Science she completed her Genius Hour over programming a computer. She was able to program and code a game called Bounce. Coding is an interest of hers and I see a bright future for her.

Sherridan just closed out a very successful golf season. Sherridan was consistently the low scorer on the team throughout the year. She qualified for the state tournament by placing 7th at districts and earned a 12th place medal at the Class C Nebraska State Tournament.

At all three Range Judging competitions we attended this fall, Jayce was the top scoring individual from Valentine.  He earned ribbons at both the Area and State Competition.  Jayce has also been actively involved in community service projects the Valentine FFA Chapter has been involved with.

Noah had back to back great games. Noah had 255 all purpose yards vs. Hershey and another great performance vs. Bridgeport this past week. Both games resulted in victories.

Evan Pettigrew is in my personal finance class. He has really improved on his test scores for the last two chapters.  Evan scored a perfect 100% on his Chapter 4 test this week!  His studying is really paying off!

Lyle had a huge game last week vs. the St. Pat Irish. Lyle accumulated 143yds on 23 carries and a touchdown to help the badgers to a district win.

Ramsey Ravenscroft has shown tremendous improvement from the beginning of the season to now due to hard work, practice and dedication. She placed 4th at the Valentine Invite this week while shooting a career low.

BADGER OF THE WEEK

James Battershaw, Junior, Cross-Country
 
This is James' first year in cross-country and he has been a great asset to the team. He is working his way up the roster and finished as the Badger's second runner the last two meets and set a personal record of 19:43 at Broken Bow.
