Your Child And Internet Safety
With summer fast approaching, we would like to help you protect your children from predators who lurk on the Internet. Alarmingly, one in seven youths receives an unwanted sexual solicitation online, and one in three will be exposed to sexual material online. Of these, only 5% of those sexually solicited and 2% who encountered unwanted sexual material online told an adult.
According to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s publication Online Victimization of Youth: Five Years Later, 13% of elementary aged children have received some type of sexual solicitation or approach through the Internet. Because we cannot speak to every child, we making these Safety Tips sheets available so you can visit with your child about Internet Safety. Internet Safety is taught in the school, but we feel that it can never be stressed enough, and would like your help as parents to reinforce what they have learned at school. As you can see, one page of the Safety Tips sheet is for parents about how you can keep your child safe on the Internet. The other page contains safety tips for children.
We appreciate your assistance in this endeavor. Please do not hesitate to give Mike Norris, our Project Safe Childhood Coordinator and lead Internet predator prosecutor, a call at 402- 661-3700 if you have any questions.
