Nebraska State Senator Visits Valentine Middle School
State Senator Deb Fischer speaks to VMS Students
November 22, 2007
Senator Deb Fischer paid a visit to the Valentine Middle School
on
Wednesday, November 21. She spoke to the entire student body
about
her background and reasons for wanting to get involved with
the
Nebraska State Legislature. The 43rd District, which she
represents,
has a total of 17,000 square miles and is made up of small towns
and
rural areas. She appreciates hearing from constituents and
stated
that she receives 50-100
e-mails a day that she reads and answers.
A student asked Senator Fischer why she chose to get involved in
politics and she replied that she liked listening and helping people
and as a Senator she could help write public policies that would
benefit Nebraskans. Another student asked what she felt was her most
important contribution to the state since becoming a Senator. Her
answer included helping set the state budget and setting aside money
for the hi-way trust fund. Senator Fischer explained term limits to
the students and stated that she would run for a second term of office.
The Clerk of the Legislature, Michael J. Flood, encourages Senators
to become an educational resource that encourages civic learning and
understanding of a representative democracy. Senator Fischer proved
to be a valuable resource for the students at VMS.
